Family Law Barrister

Brintyn Smith (Tūhoe) is a qualified barrister based in Warkworth, New Zealand, specialising in family law and related matters. Known for his kindness, empathy, and principled approach, he provides specialist legal support to clients navigating complex family issues.

Brintyn’s practice encompasses relationship property disputes, care of children, parenting and guardianship matters, family violence, relocation, and care and protection. He is listed on the Court-approved Lawyer for Child panel, regularly appointed by the Family Court to represent children in legal proceedings. He also delivers legal aid services, reflecting his commitment to accessible justice.

An accredited mediator with the Resolution Institute and a trained collaborative lawyer, Brintyn prioritises resolving disputes outside of court whenever appropriate, using non-adversarial methods that foster cooperation and respect. His interest in practice and procedure, alternative dispute resolution, and elder law informs his holistic approach to family law.

Before establishing his barrister practice, Brintyn gained valuable insight into child protection and systemic challenges while working for Oranga Tamariki.

Beyond legal advocacy, Brintyn is deeply committed to practitioner wellbeing. He regularly presents at conferences and workshops both in New Zealand and overseas, speaking on topics of professional safety, sustainable practice, and wellness in the legal profession.

As an Advisory Board member of The Kind Lawyers, Brintyn champions a kinder, reflective approach to the law, believing that empathy and collaboration are essential to effective legal practice.
